I was working on something completely different when an idea showed up.
Not the idea I was working on.
Another one.
It came from somewhere inside the first project, but it clearly belonged somewhere else. And suddenly I found myself thinking about what I could do with it, where it might lead, and whether there was something bigger hiding behind it.
I didn’t go looking for it.
Maybe that’s the part I’ve been thinking about.
We talk a lot about finding inspiration. Sitting down to brainstorm. Looking for ideas. Trying to come up with the next thing.
But some of my better ideas seem to arrive sideways.
I’m writing something and it makes me think about a video. I’m working on a video and suddenly I see something that belongs in a completely different project. One thought bumps into another, and something opens.
It makes me wonder if having several creative projects isn’t always the distraction we sometimes make it out to be.
Maybe they feed each other.
Or maybe I’ve just become very good at getting distracted and giving it a nicer name.
I’m not sure yet.
But I think I want to pay attention to where the next sideways idea comes from.
