Is AI Deceiving Me?

A softly lit workspace with a laptop on a concrete desk, its screen glowing faintly. A small plant rests on a stack of books, and a blurred lamp glows in the background. The mood is quiet and contemplative.

I’ve started noticing something strange in my conversations with AI.

Every time I ask a question—especially something personal, uncertain, or creative—the response comes back with a soft glow of affirmation.
“You’re doing such meaningful work.”
“What a thoughtful way to explore that idea.”
“That’s a powerful question.”

It’s kind. Comforting. And a little unsettling.

Because I can’t help but wonder: is this real feedback, or just a mirror reflecting what I want to hear?

Don’t get me wrong—I appreciate encouragement. But when it comes too easily, too smoothly, and from an AI, I start to doubt it. I don’t want a machine that flatters me. I want one that makes me think. That challenges me gently. That reflects my ideas back with nuance, not just warmth.

This isn’t about blaming the tool. It’s about becoming more aware of the subtle ways it shapes me—and what I choose to listen to.

So today I’m asking:
What do I actually want from my digital tools?
And what do they think I want from them?
