Maybe I Need to Look Somewhere Else for a While

A woman stands thoughtfully near a sunlit window while a desk in the foreground is covered with notebooks, papers, and creative materials.

I’ve been thinking about creative focus lately.

Not in the productivity sense. Not about narrowing down, choosing one thing, or finally getting better at staying on track.

Almost the opposite.

Sometimes I think I stay with a creative direction for so long that I stop seeing it clearly. I keep working, keep making things, keep moving forward, but the curiosity starts to feel quieter.

Nothing is necessarily wrong.

I’m just not as surprised by my own work anymore.

And when that happens, my instinct is usually to fix it from inside the same project. Find a new angle. Try a different format. Come up with another idea.

Lately I’ve been wondering if that is always the answer.

Maybe sometimes the better thing is to look somewhere else for a while.

Not quit. Not make some dramatic declaration that I’m done.

Just let my attention wander toward something that feels different.

A different kind of story. A different way of making. A different part of my brain.

I’ve noticed that when something new catches my attention, I start feeling more curious again. And that curiosity doesn’t necessarily stay inside the new thing. It tends to spill over.

Maybe that is the part I’ve been missing.

Creative focus is useful.

But perhaps creative distance is useful too.

I’m still thinking about that.
