
The more I work with AI, the more I notice something subtle happening in the background of the process.
Not in the technology itself.
In the effort.
For most of my life, thinking had a certain friction to it. When I wanted to understand something, I had to sit with the problem for a while. Sometimes a long while. I would read, make notes, start writing, stop, cross things out, try again.
Progress was slow, but the slowness was part of the process. It forced my mind to stay engaged.
AI changes that rhythm.
Now an explanation can arrive in seconds. An outline appears instantly. A rough paragraph can be generated before I have even fully formed my own thoughts about the topic.
On the surface, this feels incredibly productive. And in many ways, it is.
But there is a quiet side effect that I think we are only beginning to notice.
When effort disappears, attention often disappears with it.
The small mental struggle that used to push an idea forward is replaced by something smoother. Instead of wrestling with a problem, we evaluate answers that appear almost fully formed.
The danger here is not that AI is wrong or misleading.
The danger is that it can feel finished.
A polished explanation creates a powerful illusion: it makes understanding feel complete even when our own thinking has barely begun.
I see this in myself sometimes. I read a clear explanation generated by AI and feel the small internal signal that says, Yes, that makes sense.
But if I had to explain the same idea to someone else a few minutes later, I might struggle.
That gap between recognizing an explanation and truly understanding it is not new. Teachers have always seen it in classrooms. Students nod along during a lecture, but the real test comes when they try to explain the concept themselves.
AI simply makes this gap easier to fall into.
Because the explanations are always there, ready and waiting.
And this is where I think the real challenge of AI begins.
Not in controlling the technology.
In protecting our thinking.
The question is not whether we should use AI. That debate is already over. These tools are here, and they are becoming part of everyday work, learning, and creativity.
The real question is how we use them without slowly training our minds to work less.
Because there are at least three ways AI can enter our thinking process.
It can replace thinking.
It can assist thinking.
Or it can strengthen thinking.
Replacing thinking is the easiest path. Ask the question, accept the answer, move on.
Assisting thinking is better. The tool helps with research, drafting, or organization while we remain actively involved.
But strengthening thinking is something different.
It means using AI as a partner that pushes our ideas further rather than finishing them for us.
Instead of asking for answers, we ask for counterarguments. Instead of accepting explanations, we test whether we can explain the idea ourselves. Instead of generating a final paragraph, we start with our own rough version and use the tool to challenge it.
In that role, AI becomes less like a shortcut and more like a training partner.
And that might be the most interesting possibility of all.
Because the same technology that can make thinking easier can also make thinking deeper.
But only if we stay conscious of the difference.
The tools will keep improving. That part is almost guaranteed.
What remains uncertain is whether we will train ourselves to think with them, or slowly get used to letting them think for us.
That choice, quiet as it is, might shape more than we realize.
