I like stability.
Especially after something has changed. It is a relief when things settle again and I no longer have to think about every small decision.
I can just get on with things.
But lately I have been wondering whether stability can be a little deceiving.
Change makes us pay attention because suddenly something does not fit. We notice it. We have to.
Stability does not ask the same of us.
If something seems to be working, I probably will not stop and examine it too closely. Why would I? There are always other things asking for my attention, and it is easy to leave the familiar parts alone simply because they are not causing any obvious problems.
Maybe that is where the laziness comes in.
Not the kind where I do nothing. I might actually be doing quite a lot.
But I am not necessarily looking very deeply at what I am doing.
I think it is possible to become comfortable with something long after I have stopped asking whether it still fits. And perhaps nothing has to be noticeably wrong for that question to be worth asking.
I’m still thinking about that.
